Custom white built-in Murphy bed with open shelving, Austin TX

Not a kit. Not a cabinet.
A true built-in.

A built-in Murphy bed is permanently anchored into your wall studs and custom-sized to your exact space. It's not a freestanding piece of furniture you can move. It's a structural part of the room, designed to look like it was always there.

Most Murphy bed companies sell cabinet-style beds that sit against the wall. They look fine on day one. By year three, the mechanisms are pulling, the panels are showing wear, and the whole thing looks exactly like what it is: a piece of flat-pack furniture pretending to be built-in.

Every bed we build at Madewell is anchored directly into your studs, built from furniture-grade plywood, and professionally finished so the result looks and feels like part of the room.

Why It Matters

Built-ins demand better materials.
We use solid plywood. Always.

01
Screw holding strength

Wall-mounting brackets, mechanism hardware, and hinges all rely on screws biting into the cabinet material. Plywood grips screws tightly across its cross-laminated layers. Particleboard strips out over time. That's a safety issue when the wall mounting is involved.

02
Structural rigidity under load

A Murphy bed cabinet supports its own weight plus an 80–125 lb mattress in motion. Every raise and lower flexes the structure slightly. Plywood distributes that stress across laminated layers. Particleboard is brittle under lateral force and degrades with every cycle.

03
Moisture resistance in Austin

Austin's humidity swings put real stress on wood-based materials. Particleboard and MDF absorb moisture readily, swelling, warping, and crumbling at the edges over time. Once that starts, it's permanent. Plywood's cross-laminated construction gives it the dimensional stability particleboard can never match.

How we build
your built-in

Every Madewell built-in follows the same four-step process. We only visit once you're ready to commit. No surprises, no guesswork.

01
You measure, we design

Send us your wall dimensions and we'll build a detailed 3D rendering of your exact build, sized to your ceiling height, wall width, and any architectural constraints like outlets, vents, or doors.

02
You approve every detail

Profile, finish color, pull style, cabinetry configuration, desk system: you review and approve the full design before we fabricate a single panel. Nothing goes into production without your sign-off.

03
Handcrafted in Austin

Every built-in is fabricated in our Austin workshop from solid plywood. Never particleboard. Professionally spray-finished before it leaves the shop, so the finish is flawless when it arrives at your home.

04
White-glove installation

Our own team installs every build. No subcontractors. We anchor directly into your wall studs, level everything precisely, and don't leave until you love the result. Serving all of Central Texas.

Common Questions

A few things
people ask first

Everything from how long it takes to whether we cut into your walls. If you don't see your question here, the full FAQ has every answer.

Read the full FAQ
How long does a build take from start to finish?

Most builds go from deposit to installation in 8 to 10 weeks. That includes your design approval, fabrication in our Austin workshop, and scheduling your install date. More complex builds with extensive cabinetry may take a bit longer. We will give you a specific timeline estimate during your design call.

How long does installation take?

A standard murphy bed installation runs 2 to 4 hours. Larger builds with full cabinetry walls take longer, but we will give you a time window when we schedule. Our own crew handles every installation. No subcontractors, ever.

Where do you install?

We serve Austin and the surrounding Central Texas area, including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Dripping Springs, Lago Vista, and Boerne. We design, build, and install every project ourselves, which means we only work within the region where we can stand behind the result in person.

Do I need to visit a showroom?

No. Most projects are handled remotely through phone, email, and detailed 3D renderings. You can review every material, finish, and configuration detail before we build a single panel. If you would like to see materials and past builds in person, you are welcome to visit our shop at 1115 W. Anderson Ln. in Austin, but it is not required to move forward.

What wood do you use?

Every build is constructed from solid furniture-grade plywood. Never particleboard, never MDF. Plywood holds screws tighter, handles lateral stress better, and stands up to Austin's humidity swings in ways that cheaper materials simply cannot. It is the only structural material we use, on every build.

Do you cut into my walls?

No. Our beds mount directly to your wall studs with fasteners. No cutting, no framing, no drywall work required. If you ever wanted to remove the bed down the road, the only repair needed would be patching a few small screw holes.
