Frequently Asked Questions

Murphy Bed FAQ, answered honestly.

Whether you're exploring a murphy bed for the first time or comparing builders, we want you to feel confident before reaching out. Below are the questions we hear most, answered with full transparency.

Pricing & What's Included

How much does a custom murphy bed cost?

Our builds start at $2,500 for a standard vertical twin or full in a Velar (flat panel) profile with a white spray finish. Queen beds start at $2,650 and kings at $3,100. Final pricing depends on size, profile, headboard depth, and any upgrades like a folding desk, custom paint, or built-in lighting.

What's included in the base price?

Every build includes a commercial-grade spring mechanism with a lifetime warranty, solid plywood construction, a professionally sprayed finish in white, your choice of standard hardware pulls, and a two-year craftsmanship warranty.

Is installation included in the price?

Installation is not included in the base bed price and is quoted separately. Every build is installed by our own team, and we never outsource. Installation pricing depends on your location and the complexity of the build.

Are there any hidden costs I should know about?

No. We provide a detailed, itemized quote before you commit to anything. The quote includes the bed, all selected upgrades, and installation as a separate line item. There are no surprise charges.

Do you offer financing?

We don't offer in-house financing at this time, but we're happy to discuss payment timing. A deposit is required to begin your build, with the balance due on installation day.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, check, credit card, ACH transfer, and Zelle.

Build Process & Timeline

How long does it take to build a murphy bed?

Most builds take 8 to 10 weeks from deposit to installation. More complex builds with extensive cabinetry or custom finishes may take longer, and timelines can vary depending on the number of builds currently in our queue. We'll give you a timeline estimate during your design consultation.

What does the process look like from start to finish?

It starts with a design call where you share your room measurements and vision. We create a detailed 3D rendering for your approval. Once you sign off and place your deposit, we begin fabrication in our Austin workshop. When the build is complete, our team schedules and handles the installation.

Do I need to come to your shop?

No. Most of our projects are handled remotely through phone calls, email, and 3D renderings. You're welcome to visit our shop at 1115 W. Anderson Ln. in Austin if you'd like to see materials and past builds in person, but it's not required.

Will you come to my house for measurements?

For most projects, we don't do site visits before you've committed to a build. We'll walk you through exactly how to measure your space. It's straightforward and most customers handle it in a few minutes. The exception is wall-to-wall builds, where we will come out to verify measurements before fabrication. Otherwise, we only come to your home on installation day.

Materials & Construction

What materials do you use?

Every murphy bed is built from solid furniture-grade plywood, never particleboard or MDF. We use real plywood for all structural components because it's stronger, smoother, and holds up to daily use far better than cheaper alternatives.

Why plywood instead of particleboard?

Particleboard is weaker, heavier, and prone to sagging, chipping, and moisture damage. It's the standard in flat-pack and mass-produced murphy beds because it's cheap. We use plywood because a murphy bed is a piece of furniture you'll operate every day, and the materials need to hold up for decades.

What kind of mechanism do you use?

We use a commercial-grade spring-lift mechanism. It's smooth, quiet, and designed for daily use. The mechanism comes with a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.

How durable is a Madewell murphy bed?

Our beds are built to last 20+ years with daily use. The plywood construction resists warping and sagging, the mechanism is rated for tens of thousands of cycles, and the spray finish is far more durable than brush or roll-on paint.

Where do you source your materials?

Approximately 90% of our materials are sourced from Texas suppliers. The beds are designed, built, and installed entirely by our team in Austin.

Sizing, Dimensions & Room Requirements

What sizes are available?

We build vertical murphy beds in Twin, Full, Queen, and King (standard King only, not California King). Horizontal murphy beds are available in Full and Queen. King is not available in a horizontal configuration.

How much ceiling height do I need?

For a vertical murphy bed, you need a minimum of 89 inches (about 7'5") of ceiling height for a queen or king, and 84 inches (7') for a full. If your ceiling is lower, a horizontal configuration is usually the better option.

How far does the bed stick out from the wall when open?

This is called the projection. It depends on your bed size and headboard depth. A standard 16-inch-deep queen projects about 89.5 inches from the wall when open. Our deeper headboard options (18" and 20") add a couple of inches to the projection. Full dimensions for every size are listed on our vertical beds and horizontal beds pages.

Will a murphy bed fit in my room?

If you can fit a standard bed in the room, you can almost certainly fit a murphy bed. The key measurements are wall width, ceiling height, and floor clearance in front of the bed. We'll help you confirm fit during the design call.

Can I put a murphy bed on any wall?

The wall needs to have studs or a solid surface for secure mounting. Interior walls, exterior walls, and shared walls all work. We can also mount to brick, stone, or concrete with the right anchoring approach, which we can discuss during consultation.

What about ceiling fans and light fixtures?

Ceiling-mounted obstacles like fans and lights need to clear the bed's swing arc when it opens. We built a free ceiling clearance calculator on our website to help you check this before your consultation.

Installation & Service Area

Where do you install?

We serve Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Kyle, Buda, and the surrounding Central Texas area. We do not ship or install outside this region.

Who handles the installation?

Our own crew, never subcontractors. The same team that builds your bed installs it. This ensures quality control from start to finish.

How long does installation take?

A standard murphy bed installation takes 2 to 4 hours. Builds with extensive cabinetry or complex configurations may take longer. We'll give you a time estimate when we schedule.

Do you need to cut into my wall?

No. Our murphy beds mount to the wall studs with fasteners: no cutting, no framing, no drywall work. If you ever want to remove the bed, the only repair needed is patching a few small screw holes.

Can I install it myself?

We don't recommend it. Proper installation is critical for safety and mechanism performance. Our installation warranty only applies to beds installed by our team.

Are there any additional installation charges?

There can be. We charge an additional fee for second floor and above installations due to the extra time and effort involved. There is also a charge if you'd like an existing electrical outlet brought into a cabinet for built-in charging or lighting. Both of these are discussed during the quoting process so you'll know the full cost before committing.

Mattress Compatibility

What kind of mattress works with a murphy bed?

Memory foam mattresses are the best option. They hold their shape when stored vertically, flex smoothly with the folding motion, and tend to weigh less than other types. We recommend Lull mattresses specifically and offer discounted pricing when bundled with your build.

What's the maximum mattress thickness?

Our standard mechanism accommodates mattresses up to 12 inches thick. If you prefer a thicker mattress (up to 13 inches), we offer a leg upgrade for $175.

Can I use my existing mattress?

Possibly. It needs to be the correct size, under 12 inches thick (or 13 with the upgrade), under 125 lbs, and flexible enough to fold with the bed. Memory foam and pocketed-coil hybrids generally work well. Traditional innerspring mattresses can work depending on the specific mattress, but results vary. Pillow-top mattresses are not recommended.

Is sleeping on a murphy bed comfortable?

Yes. You're sleeping on a real mattress supported by a solid plywood platform with metal support bars underneath. The bars are there for structural support, but you won't feel them through the mattress. The comfort level is entirely determined by the mattress you choose. Many of our customers use their murphy beds as their primary bed.

Do I need special sheets?

Standard fitted sheets work fine. We do recommend avoiding overly bulky comforters or duvets, as they can add thickness when the bed is stored. A quilt or lightweight blanket is ideal for leaving on the bed when it folds up.

Customization Options

What design profiles do you offer?

We offer six signature profiles: Velar (flat panel), Shaker, Craftsman, Rivington, Crestview, and Enfield. Each has a distinct aesthetic, from ultra-modern to traditional. You can explore all six on our designs page.

Can I choose a custom paint color?

Yes. White is our standard finish at no extra charge. For $350, you can choose any active color from any paint manufacturer, and we'll match it through Benjamin Moore and professionally spray the entire unit.

Can you add a desk to the murphy bed?

Yes. Our folding desk upgrade ($475) mounts directly to the front of the bed and includes locking support legs. It's available on vertical Twin, Full, and Queen sizes and provides a workspace up to 40 inches wide.

What about built-in cabinets and shelving?

We build a full range of companion cabinetry: bookcases, wardrobes, single and double door cabinets, and drawer units. Each cabinet is custom-sized to your wall and finished to match your bed. Pricing starts at $695 depending on size and configuration. See our full cabinetry options.

Can you build something completely custom?

Yes. If you have a specific vision that goes beyond our standard profiles and options, we're happy to collaborate. We've built beds with integrated library walls, room-width built-ins, and other one-of-a-kind configurations. Just tell us what you're envisioning.

Do you build anything other than murphy beds?

Our focus is custom murphy beds and the cabinetry that surrounds them. We don't build standalone furniture, kitchens, or other cabinetry unrelated to murphy bed installations.
