The wrong mattress can affect how your Murphy bed operates, how long the mechanism lasts, and how comfortable your guests actually sleep.
One of the most common questions we get is simple: what mattress should I use? After years of installs and feedback from hundreds of Austin homeowners, here's everything we've learned.
Not all mattresses work in a Murphy bed. The folding motion, vertical storage, and weight limits all matter. We spent a long time evaluating options before recommending one to our clients — and Lull kept rising to the top.
Quick Summary
Not every mattress is compatible with a wall bed. These are the three criteria any mattress must meet to work properly with our builds.
Our standard mechanism accommodates mattresses up to 12 inches thick. For 13 inches, we offer a leg upgrade that creates the additional clearance needed.
Max 12" standard / 13" with upgradeThe mattress should weigh 125 lbs or less. Heavier mattresses put excessive strain on the spring mechanism over time, affecting both performance and longevity.
125 lbs or lessThe mattress needs to travel with the bed as it folds up and down. This rules out some ultra-rigid or oversized constructions that can't handle the folding motion.
Must flex with bed movementMattress Types
Memory foam is the ideal Murphy bed mattress material. It holds its shape well, doesn't shift inside the cabinet when stored vertically, and folds smoothly with the bed's movement. It's also typically lighter than hybrid or innerspring options, which is good for mechanism longevity. The Lull Original and Premium Original are both memory foam and check every box.
A quality hybrid can work in a Murphy bed, but only if it uses pocketed coils. Pocketed coils move independently and handle the folding motion much better than traditional connected coil systems. The Lull Luxe Hybrid uses pocketed coils and is a great option if you prefer the feel of a hybrid.
Traditional innerspring mattresses use interconnected coil systems that don't flex well with the folding motion. Over time, this can damage the coil structure and affect both comfort and compatibility. We don't recommend innerspring mattresses for wall beds.
Pillow tops add comfort when flat, but create real problems in a Murphy bed. When stored vertically, gravity pulls on the pillow top material, causing it to sag and bunch over time. This looks bad and can make the mattress sit unevenly when lowered. Stick to a flat, uniform mattress profile.
Lull Mattress Pricing
All mattresses delivered and installed on the same day as your Murphy bed. Discounted pricing available when bundled with your build.
We spent a long time evaluating mattress options before recommending one to our clients. Lull kept rising to the top for a few key reasons.
The memory foam construction holds its shape whether the bed is vertical or horizontal, and the weight comes in well under our 125 lb limit across all sizes.
The 10" and 12" models work with our standard mechanism. The 13" Luxe Hybrid pairs with our leg upgrade for clients who want a plusher feel without compromising the mechanism.
Every Lull mattress uses foam independently tested for harmful chemicals — important when sleeping in a confined cabinet space.
That matches the confidence we put into our own builds. We don't want to recommend a mattress that's going to need replacing in five years.
We deliver and install your Lull mattress on the same day as your Murphy bed. No coordinating separate deliveries, no wrestling a mattress up your stairs alone.
